What a day! Six feisty ladies took to the Powerline and Sutherland Trails and soaked in the beauty of the desert, listened to the rush of the snow runoff stream through the canyon, and dodged the rocks along the way as they clicked off 9+ miles of climbs and (a few) descents in perfect weather. Our three canine companions (Tucker, Gus, and Kiernan) scouted ahead, chasing each other to see if pups or oldtimers would be king of the desert today, and then they rounded us up to be sure all made it up and back without losing touch with the group. If you've never challenged yourself to take on life and what it has to offer, it's about time you did! You don't know if you don't try, and trust me, you won't regret it. These Thursday morning hikes are a real blessing. When I walk on my own, it is peaceful and fulfilling. When I walk with the Thursday hiking group, it is challenge and chatter and adventure and giggles and aches and a renewal of life. I hope it goes on forever!

An Artist at Work
Ah, the beauty that surrounds us thanks to our Creator! My friend, Kusam, and I spent a few days in Sedona and soaked in the breathtaking views all around us. Weather was perfect; hiked the Red Rock State Park and snapped pictures to try to capture that color. Nothing compares to the real deal, though. Great time with a wonderful friend seeing sights, going to galleries, hiking, reading in front of the fire, and sharing conversations about everything under the sun. Once again, I realize how truly blessed I am.

Trying out a New Smoker
Oh, Baby, will we be eatin' good tonight! We are trying out a pellet grill/smoker to see how it works. This is the Green Mountain "Jim Bowie" pellet grill, and it's on loan to us this weekend from the dealer to see if we like it. What you see here is a 17-pound chuck and 15 pounds of pork shoulder!!! YUM! We got some apple pellets to mix in with the Green Mountain "premium gold blend" pellets to see how the flavor compares with our little charcoal smoker. We'll let you guys know how it tastes! The beauty of this rig is you pretty much set it and forget it! It has a built in temperature gauge and a feeder system that feeds pellets into a fire pit to keep the temp where you want it. All you have to do is prep the meat and put it on, then take it off when it's done. So, we'll see. Check back for future posts to find out how it all tasted!
7 Women, 3 Dogs, and 9 Miles of Trail

I've recently starting hiking on Thursdays with an incredible group of women and their dogs. We've hiked Dove Mountain, the back side of the Catalinas, the Southerland Trail, and the Catalina State Park Trail. It's a different location each week. My friend, Katie, whose second home I occasionally stay in at Pagosa on my way up to our place in Colorado, is the one who pulled it all together. She and I worked together for years and have known each other for 30+ years. Anyway, everyone becomes a friend in Katie's circle. When she meets someone interesting, she invites them to hike, or go on their boat, or go for a horseback ride (she is an avid rider) or fly to Pagosa, or bike ride, or something. Little by little, this hiking group has come together and we look forward to a new 5+ mile hiking adventure each week. Sometimes there are only 3; sometimes there are 7; sometimes it's something in between. Sometimes there's 1 dog; sometimes there are 2 or 3; and the most I think there have been is 5. We don't have a dog, so I know I won't be taking one! At any rate, we tromp around the desert soaking in the gorgeous views, breathtaking rock formations, and indescribable desert vegetation as we work our way from one end to the other. Sometimes it's a loop; sometimes we put cars at each end and go from one end to the other and drive back. But it never really matters because the time flies and everyone chats and tells stories and chimes in with their opinions about whatever topic is on our minds.
The dogs are as varied as the women: some herders, some scouts, some just along for the great outdoors.
People we meet (as well as the cows we find, I guess) probably wonder about our little group, most of whom have long legs and a stride that keeps us vertically-challenged folks trying to catch up from start to finish. This last Thursday we picked up a stray (man) along the trail whose wife had stopped some mile or two back to rest. He called us his harem of trail tramps and jokingly said that his wife of 54 years might be wondering about him when he showed back up with 7 extra women! I reminded him he "might have some 'splainin' to do, Lucy!" He joined right in with the chatter, telling us all about his recent trip to Switzerland and Italy and their home in Boulder. We left him off with his wife to amble back and made our way onward.
Lunch this week was as relaxing as it could get on big slabs of rock overlooking a stream and deep pools of water in 70-degree sunshine. The trees above were mostly bare but for a few clusters here and there of yellowing leaves. The dogs played in the water (too cold for the humans!) and let us know when it was time to get back on the trail.
And so to Katie, Elaina, Jane, Debbie, Carol, and Kay -- not to mention Gus, Tucker, and Kiernan - thanks for another memorable hike. Can't wait to see what's next!

Warmth and Beauty Abound
Even though Eliz's trip was cut a day short, we have packed in a lot of fun! The weather has been glorious -- in the 70s for our daytime activities! So we went to the Saguaro National Monument West, stopping for photos of the incredible sentinels of the desert and going to the Valley View overlook. After lunch at Choice Greens and a quick stop at Trader Joes, we were off to hike Sabino Canyon with its running stream, yellow-leafed cottonwoods (only in Tucson in January!), and incredible striations in the mountainside. We topped the evening off with Greek food at Opa! and a fun little performance at the Gaslight Theater called Gunsmokin'. And that was all day one!
Day two found Spyder Woman staying at our home, taking her first ride on Erick's motorcycle and loving every minute of it. Then we were off to a retirement party of a friend of mine where we enjoyed dinner and laughter with some really fun folks who showed to share Michael's big event. Continuing on the party circuit, we went to a small gathering of Erick's working buddies and watched kids and adults alike try to dance like Michael Jackson on the Wii. We laughed our sides sore! By the time we were home, we fell into bed exhausted!
Today we're headed to May's Counter for chicken and waffles and possibly to see Julie, Terri, and Julia before we have to take Eliz to the airport. More pics on that if it works out.
What a visit! We love Tia, and we're so blessed to have had this time with her.
